Abstract

The essay discusses the peculiar stylistic and iconographic representation of Christ in two images (one sculpted and one painted) from the church of Santo Domingo Yanhuitlán, in the Mixtec highlands of Oaxaca, Mexico. Historical data complement the formal analysis of the artworks and point to the engagement with current issues on the role of sacred images in the post-Reformation period and the local political situation.
