Abstract
Vincent van Gogh’s troubled life has excessively influenced the
analysis of this pictorial production. In fact, behind the image of the
“crazy” and “expressionist” artist, there was always a painter who was
aware of the esthetic theories of this time––especially
of the work of Charles Blanc––and who consciously and
sistematically preoccupied with the search for general solution to the
problems of representation and the relationships among colors. This
conclusion, as well as the body of this article, is based above all, on te
study of Van Gogh’s correspondence
